The 2013 McMaster Athletic awards completed another outstanding varsity season that saw championships, individual awards, and personal bests recognized and celebrated.  Topping the list of major award winners were the 2012-13 McMaster Athletes of the year, Victoria Coates from Cross Country and Indoor track and football player Kyle Quinlan. 

THERESE QUIGLEY AWARD- VICTORIA COATES, CROSS-COUNTRY & TRACK

Victoria enjoyed a dominant year on both the grass and track this past season. The fourth-year runner claimed silver at the OUA Cross-Country Championship and a bronze at the CIS national meet. She transitioned seamlessly to the indoor season, and captured bronze at the 3000m distance in both the OUA and CIS Championship meets. Her time at the national championships stood not only as a personal best, but as the second-fastest 3000m run by a McMaster woman.

IVOR WYNNE AWARD- KYLE QUINLAN, FOOTBALL

Kyle Quinlan spent the 2012 OUA season re-writing the McMaster record book as he led the Marauders to an undefeated league record, and a second consecutive Yates Cup title and Vanier Cup berth. He set a new OUA season record with a 69% completion percentage.  He capped off the regular season by setting a new standard for McMaster’s all-time passing touchdown mark. Kyle was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2012 Mitchell Bowl, a first-team CIS All-Canadian, OUA MVP, and recipient of the Hec Crighton trophy as the Outstanding Player in Canada.

DR. RAY JOHNSON AWARD (Graduating male athlete that exhibits ability, leadership and the spirit of McMaster)- CHRIS PICKARD, FOOTBALL

Chris has been a starter on the offensive line for the Marauders' past two historic seasons while pursuing an honours degree in history. He has coordinated the team’s Football FUNdamentals kid’s camp for the past three summers and continues to be an active member of the Mac Athletes Care program. When he's not training, playing, or working at the Maroon Shop, he can be seen at the Burridge Gym cheering on McMaster's basketball and volleyball teams.

EDNA GUEST AWARD (Graduating female athlete that exhibits ability, leadership and the spirit of McMaster)- MAGGIE COGGER-ORR, RUGBY

Maggie was named as an OUA All-Star for the third time this past season, despite missing two of her team's six games while recuperating from knee surgery. A leader on the field, Maggie played at three drastically different positions throughout this past season.  Off the field, Maggie holds the program together, by assisting with recruiting, organizing training camp, and executing the year-end banquet. She organized the team's first annual high school clinic last summer and was a founding member of an organization that introduces young girls to rugby.
                                 
MEL & MARILYN HAWKRIGG AWARD (Rookies of the year)

Female - DANIELLE BOIAGO, BASKETBALL

A Hamilton native, Danielle made an impact on Marauder fortunes from the moment she stepped on campus.  She averaged 15.3 points per game to rank 8th in the league and her 2.4 steals per game ranked 7th in the OUA. Her 51 total steals and 39 made three-point shots were the second highest numbers in McMaster history. Danielle was named the OUA West Rookie of the Year, and was selected to the CIS All-Rookie team. 

Male- DANY DEMYANENKO, VOLLEYBALL

Dany moved right into the middle of the Marauder line-up, and by year-end the Toronto native led the country in kill percentage with 47%.  He also demonstrated the ability to be a defensive force as he was one of the leading blockers in the OUA. Selected as the OUA Rookie of the Year, the CIS Rookie of the Year, a CIS second-team All-Canadian, and to the CIS Championships All-Tournament team, Dany was a key contributor as McMaster won the OUA title and advanced to the CIS championship game, the best finish in team history.
 
LES PRINCE AWARD (Outstanding community service)- GRAHAM MCKELVIE, ROWING

Graham took on a major leadership role this year as a member of the executive for the McMaster Athletes Care initiative.  He spent the first term as the Director of the Living Rock Ministries, serving in a liaison role with McMaster Athletics, as well as volunteering his time.  In second term he swapped positions with another member of the executive and became the Director for the Eva Rothwell Resource Centre, while continuing to volunteer with Living Rock.  His time commitment saw him spend 2-3 visits a week, as a volunteer between the two centers, as well as assisting with other M-A-C initiatives.
                                           
BRUCE COCHRANE AWARD (Outstanding dedication and service in a support role)- MARK ZIMMERMAN, WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

While serving as the team’s student athletic therapist, Mark went above and beyond in his support role for the Marauders.  He showed a remarkable work ethic and professional approach to his care and treatment of the athletes.  He got involved in the team dynamic by assisting at practice in ways beyond his therapist duties.  His outstanding care and treatment of the team, and his willingness to take on whatever role or responsibilities that were required was a crucial element in the team’s success.
 
JOYCE WIGNALL AWARD (Team that best displays community involvement and civic ownership)- FIGURE SKATING

The McMaster figure skating team has spent the year reaching out in support of various groups both on campus and off.  Recognized at the OUA championships with the 2013 Team Spirit Award, the team displayed tremendous dedication to community outreach. They engaged young skaters from the Ancaster skating club to assist with hosting the team’s first ever competition, which was a rousing success.  The team also held several community events like “Skate with the Dean” and a “Halloween Fun Skate”, engaging people through the fun of skating.  Very active in the McMaster Athletes Care program, the figure skating team won the varsity clothing drive competition for the second straight year for most clothes donated.  The entire team has also participated in the Relay for Life event.   In addition to competing, the team has also performed between periods of Hamilton Bulldog and Dundas Real McCoy hockey games.
