Although the weather Saturday evening may have hinted at your typical cross country race, the outdoor track season was in full swing. McMaster track athletes headed to London to compete in the Ontario 10,000m Track Championships. A race consisting of 25 laps, it proved to be an evening filled with excitement.
Blair Morgan, graduate and former men's team captain, finished fifth in a personal best time of 30:14.69, while Paul Rochus, finished seventh, also in a personal best time of 30:34.18.
Within the 10,000m race, there were three junior men chasing the world junior 10 000m standard to qualify for the 2016 IAAF World Junior Championships, to be hosted in Poland in July. The winner of the junior event and third overall was Sergio Raez Villanueva, in a personal best time of 30:00.01, not only running the world junior standard but handily surpassing the set out standard time of 31:10:00. Sergio has been training with the McMaster track team and will be attending McMaster in the upcoming fall. The Marauders look forward to his official addition to the team and can't wait to see him excel within the team and in the CIS.
In addition to the 10,000m runners, several other Mac track athletes opened up their outdoor seasons with a 1500m. Solid performances were seen by Kaitlyn Pansegrau, Emily Nowak, Lauren Locco, Nick Kondrat and Luke Charbonneau.
Now it's back to the track, where the team will be competing next at home on the Mona Campbell Track on May 29th, in the first of four races hosted by the team. We invite all to come out and watch some exciting action.
